Description
Yes, N734B has been around longer than almost every other Bonanza (and most of today's pilots!) but everyone's always surprised to learn its age.
Intentionally landed gear-up after an extension failure in 1969, 34B was repossessed, the logbooks lost, and the engine overhauled in 1970, where the airframe logs begin. In 1980, it was repainted and its interior replaced, but it was then "stored" until 1988 and given an extensive annual and engine overhaul. During the 1990's, no expense was spared as a new owner's minimum equipment list far outgrew the old, dated piano-key panel, and he replaced it with a then-modern one, just bristling with equipment.
Then in 2006, another new owner replaced the old E185 engine with another converted to officially become an E225, then gave it an STC'd Bendix fuel injection, making this classic Bonanza look and fly like its offspring while evading many of the A.D.s and "tweaks" that made newer Bonanzas so much less efficient!
Flown regularly but not a ton since the overhaul, the engine still has less than 500 hours on it and, driving a dynamically-balanced, Beech electric prop requiring little attention and NO A.D.s, according to the EDM-700, digital tach, annual compression checks, and any bottle of water that hardly shows a ripple if set on the dash, it's running strong, smooth, cool, and even. Both mags were replaced less than 100 hours ago, between 2018 and 2019 annuals, oil analyses are normal, and consumption is minimal, around a quart every ten hours.
This airplane is nothing less than a minor marvel; the product of a far-ahead-of-its-time design, updated, modernized, and given regular maintenance and care. It's an absolute joy to fly and, with a range of well over 700 miles with reserves, an IFR-capable traveling machine. All it could be said to "need" before 2020 is a compliance package to get into ADS-B-mandated airspace, and it could easily keep outliving its owners!
