    Current Annual Accident/Incident Occurred on: 2011-01-10 Narrative: ON JANUARY 9, 2011, N595DY, A CZECH SPORTPLANES DYNAMIC WT-9, PILOTED BY STUDENT ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^, SUFFERED A HARD LANDING AT PALM SPRINGS INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT AFTER DEPARTING MARANA REGIONAL AIRPORT, TUSCON, AZ, AT 1300 ON A VFR SOLO CROSS COUNTRY FLIGHT. STUDENT PILOT REPORTED ENCOUNTERING A STRONG DOWNDRAFT ON FINAL APPROACH. AS A RESULT THE CANOPY EXTENDED TO THE FULL UP POSITION AND AIRCRAFT DESCENDED ABRUPTLY. STUDENT PILOT WAS UNABLE TO SECURE THE CANOPY OR STOP THE RAPID DESCENT. THE AIRCRAFT LANDED HARD ON RWY 31R, RUPTURING THE NOSE TIRE, DEPARTED THE RUNWAY TO THE NORTHWEST SUBSEQUENTLY STRIKING ONE OF THE PAPI LIGHTS. THE LEFT MAIN GEAR WAS KNOCKED OFF THE AIRCRAFT AND SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE WAS CAUSED TO ITS LEFT HORIZONTAL STABILIZER LEADING EDGE.
