    Description
HISTORY:      In 1938 the U.S. Navy submitted a requirement for a twin-engine carrier-based fighter. Using the rejected Grumman G-34 Skyrocket as a study development of the Tigercat began in earnest. The first prototype designated XF7F-1 made its maiden flight in June 1943. The powerplant for this fighter consisted of two Pratt and Whitney R-2800-22W Double Wasp engines. After Grumman completed the test flights they received a contract to supply the U.S. Marine Corps with the first production fighters and in April 1944 they delivered the first aircraft. The F7F Tigercat line was produced as a single-seat fighter, night fighter, electronic and photo-reconnaissance with later versions being updated with R-2800-34 engines, which provided increased power.      The Big Bossman is a Grumman F7F-3P, photo-reconnaissance version and was manufactured in June 1945 with serial number 80503. Delivered too late to be assigned to a combat unit the aircraft stayed in California first serving in VMD 954. The aircraft was assigned at various stations including Cherry Point, San Diego, and El Toro, CA.      In 1989, R.W. Waltrip registered the huge fighter as N800RW when the ground up restoration was completed February 10, 1989. The aircraft was displayed as part of the Lonestar Flight Museum until the current owner purchased the aircraft in 2002.The aircraft was then moved to Ione, CA and registered N805MB.  Stunning and rare Tigercat "Big Bossman" Museum quality restoration.
