Vortex Generators NOTE * NOTE * NOTE: In September 2010 This Velocity had a pilot error landing. According to the Velocity factory, it hit the beginning runway pavement that was about 1 foot higher than the land/ grass it was on. It sheared off the retractable gear system, scraped the belly and struck the propeller. In 2011 the Velocity factory did a complete new gear installation, a major airframe inspection, installed new propeller blades, re-tested this aircraft, and started its test flights with a 0 timed log book entry. The Velocity factory re-tested/ flew this Velocity and recorded 40.3 hours of test-flight time. One of the Velocity A&P's logged this Velocity as Safe and Airworthy after the Velocity factory repairs and testing. The Velocity Factory re-certified this aircraft with the FAA as a 2011 manufactured model. This aircraft was originally registered as N52BZ / SN 104B, and built in 1996. She is now, registered as N62BZ / SN DMO 344, and built in 2011. The engine log book shows the New Lycoming IO 360 has a total time of 1139.8, with a current annual inspection. Looks like a recent hard landing. Nose gear has slight kink in the gear leg. Propeller is rock nicked and has damaged blades. Propeller was repaired and signed off. Due to bad paint, it was worked on again and now is in worst shape. Minor defects that do not make this Velocity un-airworthy: 1. The nose gear FOD and splash bulkhead needs to be repaired. 2. Very minor cracks in the gel coat. 3. Door lock warning light won’t go off. 4. CHT warning light won’t go off. Minor & Major defects that make this Velocity UN-AIRWORTHY: 1. Propeller is an M&T aircraft certified 3 bladed variable hydraulic propeller that needs to be overhauled at an FAA certified propeller shop. The propeller is improperly painted and has one leading edge/tip damaged blade. 2. The engine is a certified Lycoming engine that was not inspected after a prop-strike. This is according to the Velocity Factory A&P. It has flown about 55 hours since the prop-strike with no problems. 3. The nose gear leg is bent. Very hard to notice, but bent in two places. It needs a new nose gear leg, and should have all the nose gear hardware replaced. She has flown at least twice with this bent nose gear without notice. The leg is a simple design. You can make a new one or buy one from the factory. 4. The bent nose gear was hitting the engine oil cooler upon retract. Minor damage to the oil cooler fins. I’d replace and reposition the oil cooler about 1” to the aft for more side clearance, once the gear leg is replaced. 5. The main gear legs are slightly rubbing the gear door openings. They look okay; If so, the openings need to be trimmed. If not the gear needs to be re-adjusted. 6. The hydraulic gear line(s) or pump leaks 5606 under operating pressure. 7. The instrument and radio panel needs to be mounted with proper braces. It is loose, but somewhat okay. These defects were discovered during a thorough inspection prior to a demo flight. This Velocity is available for purchase with these known defects. It is sold AS-IS with all Faults Known or Unknown. In my opinion, this Velocity has some isolated poor workmanship, along with excellent design and grand workmanship. With those “minimum” repairs, I’d fly her home and do the rest of the repairs bringing this Velocity back to quality workmanship and strong safety standards.
