Description
The Piper Super Cub PA-18 is a follow-up version of the Piper Cub J-3 which the designing engineer Walter Jamouneau had developed for the Piper Aircraft Corporation in the 1930ies (the capital letter „J“ in the name stands for the designing engineer’s surname). The Super Cub on display is one of the oldest models still existing in Europe. Built as a military version in 1950 the French Light Air Craft Group used it as a reconnaissance and liaison aircraft first.
This is a version which is equipped with a 90 hp engine. The engine was last overhauled in 2001 and so was the airframe. The paint (black and white stripes = invasion stripes) matches the colour scheme of the L-4 at the time of the allied invasion into France in 1944. The nickname „Grasshopper“ (which is a general name for light-weight aircrafts, too) dates back to that time and is still used these days.
