The Yak-3U was the last model of the piston powered Yakovlev fighters. The Yak-3 was developed from the Yak-1M (which flew in 1940) and was the work horse of the Russian Air Force and first flew in February 1943 and saw combat in June 1943. The Yak 3 was considered to be the best low altitude (below 13,000 feet) fighter of WWII and could easily out climb, outrun and out turn its two major adversaries, the BF-190 and FW-190. With its 20mm cannon it
also could destroy any of the German tanks of that era. The Yak-3U replaced the V-12 engine of the earlier Yak-3s with many a 1850 HP radial along, with many other changes. The Yak-3U first flew in May 1945 and with the end of the war and development of the jet aircraft, was not put into production. This airplane was built by the Avioane Factory in Craiova, Romania. It was built as a dual control two seat airplane including rear seat instruments. Due to the unavailability of the Shvetsov engine it was fitted with the US made Pratt & Whitney R-1830.
