Airframe Notes
A rare opportunity to purchase one of Americas most interesting fighter aircraft. Less than 10 P-38s remain in flying condition today.
The package consists of a damaged aircraft, many extra parts and is packed for shipping wooden crates and on pallets.
The Center section of the aircraft and one tail boom have been rebuilt by West Pac in Colorado to an extremely high standard.
CIVILIAN HISTORY
The immediate post-war history of this P-38 is unclear, however the Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) files indicate that Interstate Aircraft Corp. (probably Interstate Aircraft and Engineering Corporation) owned it initially. This company was based in El Segundo, California.

From Interstate, it went to Dale M. Myers who was a dealer in surplus aircraft. He sold it to Page Aviation Service in Yukon, Oklahoma in August 1950. This company was owned by, Clarence E. Page, a noted Oklahoma aviation pioneer. Page was a U.S. Army Signal Corps pilot at the end of World War I, operated flight schools for military pilots during the Second World War and was an authorized agent for the War Assets Administration (WAA) after the war.
Sixteen years later, on 29 November 1969, the aircraft was sold to Gary R. Levitz, grandson of the furniture store founder, who was an avid aircraft racer. He used components (one researcher says only the fighter nose) from this aircraft to restore 44-27053 (N345)—an aircraft he raced in the early 1970s. It appears that he donated the remains to the Confederate Air Force (CAF) in early 1975.
At this point, this aircraft became the primary component in the rebuild of the CAF aircraft Scatterbrain Kid (43-50281, N38LL) that was destroyed in a crash on 19 October 1974 in Louisiana.
In the meantime, the aircraft was sold for $1.00 to The American Airpower Heritage Flying Museum (AAHFM) on 16 September 1991 and registered by AAHFM on 16 October 1991.
The aircraft, fully restored as Scatterbrain Kid II, flew for the first time on 28 February 1992 with Colonel Sandy Sansing as pilot. The initial airworthiness certificate was issued on 7 January 1992 and was subsequently updated on 21 July 1992. She participated in the P-38 Pilot’s Association reunion in Colorado Springs in August 1992 and performed a fly-over during the dedication of the P-38 monument at the Air Force Academy. The aircraft was on display at Midland, Texas for three months from January 1993.
Then, on 28 May 1994, the aircraft crashed on takeoff. After the accident, the CAF arranged for the wreck to be transported back to the Central Texas Wing at San Marcos, Texas.
The Wing dismantled the aircraft but was unable to obtain enough funding, so it was returned to CAF headquarters in Midland, Texas around 1997. Here it remained in storage through the late 1990s and early 2000s until purchased by NPA Holdings LLC (NPA) as recorded on 30 September 2003. The current owner arranged to acquire the P-38 wreckage from NPA on 18 June 2004.
