Building on the deep experience of its parent companies: Sonaca Group – 80 years of aerostructure experience; and The Airplane Factory – more than 10 years of general aviation leadership in South Africa; Sonaca Aircraft has developed the Sonaca 200, the new generation, two-seater, certified aircraft which combines flight performance and cost-effectiveness. This new aircraft development has been performed in close collaboration with the end-users, so as to fulfil flight school, aeroclub and private pilot’s unmet needs. The Sonaca 200 is a low-wing, full metallic aircraft with a maximum take-off weight of 750kg. Its conventional structure is composed of advanced aluminum alloy frames, stringers and sheets, which will provide very effective corrosion protection.

The wing profile has been designed to optimize performance, while providing very stable behavior at low speeds. As a result of its higher mass (compared with ultra-light aircraft), and its efficient aerodynamic design, the Sonaca 200 exhibits very progressive stall behavior, which makes it the perfect aircraft for flight schools and safety-conscious pilots. It is perfectly suited to both basic training and long navigation. The Sonaca 200 has a tricycle landing gear with a steerable nose gear. All its commands are actuated through push-rod mechanisms. The Sonaca 200 is equipped with advanced systems such as new generation 115hp engine from Rotax, with multi-fuel acceptance, certified brakes, electrical flaps and Garmin instrumentation.

The Sonaca 200 is equipped with the certified Rotax 914 engine, offering high performance for high climb rates and cruise speeds. The turbocharged Rotax 914 offers excellent performance at high altitudes, while keeping weight to a minimum. It offers a time between overhauls of 2,000 hrs. Engine features: •4-cylinder 4-stroke liquid/air-cooled engine with opposed cylinders •Turbo charger with automatic waste gate control, avoiding over-boost and ensuring constant manifold pressure, as well as icing-free carburation without additional pilot inputs •Dry sump forced lubrication with separate oil tank •Fully redundant ignition and fuel supply with dual electronic ignition and dual electric fuel pumps.

The basic version of Sonaca 200 cockpit is fully equipped for night-VFR flight. A classical T arrangement of primary instruments has been chosen for ergonomic and traditional reasons. The position of each instrument and input has been optimized for efficient, logical and safe use. The dashboard is equipped with modern instrumentation including a digital engine monitoring system, artificial horizon and navigation aid.

The Sonaca 200 is equipped with high quality strobe, navigation and landing lights (fitted to both wings) for perfect visibility in adverse conditions (with LED technology). Wings are equipped with electrically operated slotted flaps with 3 setting positions (0°- 10°- 30°). Both student and instructor will enjoy the easily operated and accessible manual trim and throttle commands. Landing gear and brakes are of the highest quality and are highly effective, allowing short take-offs and landings.
