Description
Own a part of Piper aviation history!
This is the last remaining Piper Arapaho (PA-40) out of three built in 1973-1974. This is serial number 3, was fully certified, and flew as a Piper factory aircraft until it was donated to Purdue University in 1984. We purchased it from Purdue in 2018 and, after an extensive mechanical overhaul including a complete overhaul of both engines, all accessories, both propellers and all flight instruments, it was flown to Texas in 2019. It currently has its original paint and interior and is waiting for its new owner to complete the refurbishment and take it on the airshow circuit.
The Arapaho, firewall forward, is identical to a PA-39, with counter-rotating IO-320-B1A engines.
The improvements to the Arapaho are:
-Leading edge cuffs inboard and outboard of the nacelles, which reduce stall speed by approximately 12 mph.
-A single 60 gallon fuel cell in each wing, (120 gallons total), eliminating the multiple tanks on the PA-30/39.
-8 inch taller main landing gear struts alleviating the nose gear first landing issues with the PA-30/39.
-Hydraulic landing gear system which eliminates the maintenance intensive mechanical gear of the PA-30/39.
-Strakes ahead of the stabilator increasing the pitch effectiveness of the aircraft at slow speeds. (The nose can be held off the ground after landing even at a forward C.G., much like a 172).
-Ventral strakes top and bottom that increase directional stability in turbulence.
The PA-40 has approximately 1250 hours total time with approximately 15 hours on the engines and props since overhaul with many new parts including new right prop blades, all new type D fuel and oil hoses, new vacuum pumps, new fuel pumps and new ignition harnesses and spark plugs. Magnetos, starters, alternators, cylinders and all engine parts were overhauled with associated yellow tags. Even the Century autopilot and the electric trim are operational!
PA-40 serial number 3 was a factory transport aircraft for Piper from 1974 to 1985. The Arapaho solved most of the issues with the PA-30/39, but the project was halted after the PA-40 type certificate was issued by the FAA. As the PA-40 was scheduled to begin production, the oil embargo of 73/74 began along with the introduction of the much more inexpensive to build Piper Seneca at the non-union Vero Beach factory. The Arapaho was built in Lock Haven.
Our PA-40 currently has an experimental exhibition airworthiness certificate that allows Day/Night/VFR/IFR operations with all seats full. A conformity inspection was conducted by the North Texas FSDO after the flight from Purdue and the Arapaho meets the TCDS specification as it has never been modified from its original configuration.
All engine and airframe logbooks since new.
