Description
Best Piper Cub on the market. You can comfortably fly N38881 anywhere in the country except perhaps the Washington DC ADIZ or Area 51. ‘881 solves the problem of hand held radio (whose batteries NEVER last long enough) or TRACONs that insist on ADS-B squawks. No dangling wires, no VHF transceiver falling off your knee as you turn final, no ICS with a dead battery (Was the switch on, and you left that fresh 9V battery in the car?).
Installed flip/flop VHF comm radio, ICS and ADS-B (out) juiced from a long lasting, rechargeable, lightweight power supply, are all part of 38881’s flying panoply. All this has been done without a single machine screw, weld, cut or tap in the airframe that rolled out of Loch Haven factory three months before the Japanese attacked.
Performance, though, is much better than 1941. 90 horsepower Continental engine will have you wheels up in a jiffy with excellent climb. The original 12 gallon fuel (881 is STCd for MOGAS, but 100 low lead is a much better choice) has been augmented by an 8 gallon wing tank – really nice to use when you’d like to get just a little bit farther. All-in-all, this little gal will stay aloft just as long as your rear end can handle things.
If you’ve flown one of these little Grasshoppers you’ll quickly recognize the value of 881’s improvements. If you’ve yet to do this kind of flying, you’re in for quite a treat: jumps off the ground, nimble at the controls, lovely visibility, fresh air – and the pride that you’re flying a Cub. I’m sure Bill Piper had no idea how long lasting his lit1941tle bird would be.
