The Polikarpov I-16 was the world's first low-wing cantilever fighter with retractable landing gear to attain operational status. The I-16 was introduced in the mid-1930s and formed the backbone of the Soviet Air Force at the beginning of the second war. Over 7000 I-16 aircraft were built. This aircraft was rebuilt in Russia by the original factory for the Alpine Fighter Collection in New Zealand. The Alpine Fighter Collection recovered the remains of 6 I-16. Currently based in Midland Texas. The aircraft will need overhaul of the installed engine. A second spare core engine is included.
