Description
Commander advocates rank N2732B as the premier fat-nacelle Commander flying today. It was the second 560A built by Aero Design & Engineering at Wiley Post Airport in Bethany , Oklahoma in June 1955 (all ownership records available). The 560A became the first official "Air Force One." Dubbed the "Blue Canoe," it transported President Eisenhower.
The Aero Commander 560A soars as a single pilot plane carrying up to six passengers in cabin-class comfort with convertible club seating. Lycoming GO-480-D1A geared engines, fueled by Bendix pressure carburetors, power it. The engines are rated at 280 maximum continuous horsepower. It flies at 170 knots at 75 percent power with a total fuel consumption of 27/29 gallons per hour. Its service ceiling is 19,500 feet (9,500 single engine). The wings span 44 feet and support a gross weight of 6,000 pounds with a useful payload of 1,587 pounds.
Earlier models of piston Commanders included the smaller 520 with Lycoming GO-435 engines and the swept tail 560 built between 1951 and 1955. Later models include the higher horsepower, longer winged (49") 560E and F models, the 680 and 720 models, and the 500 Shrike models of Bob Hoover fame built between 1958 and 1979. The 520 and 560 series are fat-nacelle models while the 680, 720 and 500 series are speedline-nacelle models. Some 2,139 piston Commanders came into service around the world between 1951 and 1979.
AirMatrix has meticulously restored N2732B to a factory-like new condition in its facilities (CRS# XLCA477A) over an 18-month period (January - June). All systems have been rebuilt and zero-timed, including gear, engine cradles, firewalls and controls, using original factory drawings. The modular instrument panel and avionics were fully modernized using Becker ProLine, remote-mounted avionics, including a large screen (6.1") GPS moving map and 6-place stereo audio system with David Clark noise canceling headsets.
N2732B was FAA certified as a Part 135 Air Carrier in August 2003 and operates on a Minimum Equipment List (MEL). Photos and all overhaul, restoration and log book records are viewable online at www.eFlightline.com.
